Julieann Banks: Magazine and Race

NewBiggerCDs.jpg

D} Magazine and Race (Muscle Shoals AL, Fame Studio 2004) $15.00

Named after a street corner in New Orleans. The sight of an old orphanage and an unwed mothers home. The title track deals with such issues. I hope it survived the hurricanes! Uncanny that the song mentions rising water, guilt and forgiveness. I trekked to and from Alabama many times to get this one done. My first full length studio CD and first time to record with all studio musicians. Interesting take. The last track Jimmy and I almost scratched because we just couldnt get happy with the sound. The studio guys were long gone back to Nashville so as a last ditch effort to save the track we tried a take with me playing the guitars and Jimmy banging on bronze plant holders turned upside down and finally got close to the sound we were looking for! It always cracks me up when someone says it’s their favorite song on the CD!

Musicians - Julieann - Vox, washboard!, acoustic guitar, Larry Byrom (Steppenwolf, Steve Winwood) - Acoustic and electric guitar, slide, wurlitzer. Jeff King (Reba McEntire, Faith Hill) - electric guitar, bazooki and banjo. David Hood (Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson) - Bass. Roger Guth (Jimmy Buffett) - drums, cajon, percussion. Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) - Hammond and Wurlitzer organ, piano. Hassell Teekell - accordion. James LeBlanc, Gary Nichols - B Vox.
Tracks - Magazine and Race, Solid Ground, The Danger
of Thinking, Arizona Lonely, Waltzing on Water, Sea of Dreams, No Such Thing As Love, I Just Missed You, Somewhere in South Austin, Gravity Trains.

C) Sweet Magnolia (Austin 2000) - $5.00

This is a four song EP that I produced with an eye on “getting a songwriters deal” in Nashville. I felt it was pure country sounding, and since at the time Dixie Chicks were hot and I had some great connections and appointments set up through Austin contacts, I thought I was going to kick major *****! They sent me packing, spanked me soundly and told me I was writing “Texas....not Country”! Just goes to show you...write and produce for yourself with a sound that makes YOU happy. I love these tunes, but the feel of the production is very country....ahem...I mean Texas!

Julieann - Vox, Percussion, Ac Guitar, Ron Welch - Guitars, Nick Travis - Bass, Eddie Cantu - Drums, Riley Osbourn - Piano and Organ, Jim Loessberg - Steel Guitar, Champ Hood - Fiddle, Mike Cross - Backing Vox

Tracks - Honey Hung The Moon, Sweet Magnolia, Every Girl Needs a Good Broom, Words.

B) Gold (Live on Austin UT Radio 1996) - $12.00

There is one studio cut on this that the Apaches did with me, Insomnia. It is the first cut and one of my favorite tunes that I have ever written. The rest are Paul LeMond and I live on the radio. Apaches had agreed to break up and try other things after a 5 year run with no record deal. We were trying to wing it acoustic and 3 pc. (Not easy after rockin’ with the Apaches for so long!) Danny was supposed to play percussion, but had to back out due to illness at the last minute. The late Mambo (John Traynor) agreed to do it with no rehearsal and having never heard the tunes. He does a great job (as only our legendary Mambo could) even on the tambourine solos!

Tracks - Insomnia, Gold, Nothing Short of Suicide, David’s Dog, Words, Love Is Strange, Widow the Wind, Last Chance Café, Warm, Ports, Fireman’s Daughter.

A) Apaches of Paris (Austin 1994)- Fireman's Daughter(original print sold out, copies available) $10.00

I sold my CAR to pay to make this CD when our “money guy” backed out at the last minute. I can remember loading my laundry on an Austin city bus to get to the laundromat and trying to bring my groceries home on a BICYCLE! Worth it though! This is a great documentation of wonderful friends and vibrant rockin’ music!

Recorded Live at the Saxon Pub and Steamboat. Juileann Banks - Vocals Ac Guitar, Paul LeMond - Electric Guitar, Jimmy Nutt - Bass, Dave Boyle - Piano and Organ, Justin Hess - Drums, Danny Thompson - Percussion.

Tracks - Fireman’s Daughter, Last Chance Café, Always Taking, It’s Going to Rain, Color Blind, Hide and See, Warm, Kneel Down and Pray, For the Love of Pete, Grits Ain’t Groceries, Downtown, Love Is Strange, All You Need, Soul Addiction.
